わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁などの乾いたところに生える半寄生植物です。高さは２０〜５０センチになり、日当たりが良いと茎が赤みを帯びます。葉は長卵形で対生し、柄があります。７月から９月ごろ、枝先に花序をだし紅紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠の下唇には２個の米粒に似た白色の斑紋があり、苞葉は葉状で、縁には刺毛状の鋭い歯牙があります。

ゴマノハグサ科ママコナ属の一年草で、学名は Melampyrum roseum var. japonicum。英名はありません。

"Mamakona" (Melampyrum roseum var. japonicum) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is an annual herb that is native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This is a hemi-parasitic plant, and grows in arid mountain forests and forest-edges. It can reach 20-50 cm in height, and the stems are tinged red if the plant grows in places with lots of sunlight. The leaves are long-ovate, arranged in opposite with petioles. The clusters are borne at the terminal branches and bloom magenta flowers from July to September. The lower lip of corolla has two white rice-grain mottles. The leafy bracts have stinging-hair like acute odontophyllus toothed edges.
