マンサク科マンサク属の落葉高木で、学名は Hamamelis japonica var. obtusata (syn. Hamamelis japonica var. discolor f. obtusata)。英名はありません。
The "Maruba-mansaku" (Hamamelis japonica var. obtusata) belongs to Hamamelidaceae (the Witch hazel family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan. This tree is distributed from southwest Hakkaido south to the Japan Sea side of Honshu. This tree grows in mountains of the region of heavy snow and it can reach 2-5 m in height. Leaves are obovoid, alternate with round or slightly concave edges. Yellow flowers on new twigs come from March to April. There are several forma such as "Akabana-mansaku" (f. incarnata) with red petals, "Nishiki-mansaku" (f. flavo- purpurascens) with red tinged base of petals.
