The Backeberg's pincushion cactus (Mammillaria backebergiana) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is an evergreen perennial herbacious plant that is found in the states of Guerrero and Michoacan, as well as in the State of Mexico in southwestern Mexico. It grows in deserts and dry shrublands at elevations of 1400 to 1900 m, reaching a height of about 30 cm and a diameter of 5 to 6 cm. The tubercles are short and pyramidal with no ridges, and the axils are naked or bear sparse hairs. It has 1 to 3 central spines, which are straight and needle-like, yellowish-brown to brown in color, and 7-8 mm long. There are 10 to 12 radial spines, which are yellowish-white with a brownish tinge and 8-10 mm long. The flowers are purplish-red and 10-13 mm in diameter.
