ニュージーランドとオーストラリアのノーフォーク島が原産です。葉は長さ１〜３メートルほどになり、黄色い縦縞が入っています。夏に花茎を伸ばして、橙色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。葉から繊維を採るために広く栽培されています。わが国へも明治時代の初めに渡来しました。現在では生け花やアレンジの素材に利用されています。別名で「ニューさいらん（新西蘭）」とか「ニュージーランドあさ（ニュージーランド麻）」と呼ばれます。

ユリ科マオラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Phormium tenax。英名は New Zealand flax、New Zealand hemp。

The New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island, Australia. The leaves are 1 to 3 m long with yellow vertical stripes. In summer, it grows a scape and produces a profusion of orange flowers. It is widely cultivated for the fiber it produces from its leaves. It was introduced to Japan at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Today, it is used as a material for flower arrangement and ikebana. It is also known as "New Sairan" or "New Zealand hemp" in Japan.
