The Mariola (Parthenium incanum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed from the southwestern United States to northern, central and southwestern Mexico. It grows in desert grasslands and dry plains, and is 45 to 90 cm tall. The stem branches well from the base. The leaves are grayish green, deeply divided, and alternate. The branches and leaves are densely covered in wooly hair. From July to October, the small white flower heads bloom in full at the tips of the branches. Mariola has been historically used as a beverage and decoction by the indigenous people who have lived with this plant for hundreds of years.
