アメリカの南部からメキシコ北東部に分布しています。池沼や側溝などの泥上や浅瀬に生え、高さは１５〜２５センチになります。根は節から伸びます。葉は四つ葉のクローバーに似ていて、長い葉柄があります。この葉は若いうちは白い綿毛に被われます。ほとんど一年中、葉柄の下部に、楕円形からほぼ円形の胞子嚢をつけます。

デンジソウ科デンジソウ属のシダ植物で、学名は Marsilea macropoda。英名は Bigfoot waterclover。

The Bigfoot waterclover (Marsilea macropoda) belongs to Marsileaceae (the Pepperwort family). It is a perennial fern that is distributed from the southern part of the United States to north-eastern Mexico. It grows on mud and in shallow water, such as ponds and ditches, and is 15-25 cm tall. Roots grow from nodes. The leaves resemble four-leaf clovers and have long petioles. The leaves are covered with white wooly hairs when young. Almost all year round, the lower part of the petiole bears elliptic to almost circular sporangia.
