わが国の小笠原諸島に分布しています。林内や草地に生え、直立して高さは１０メートルほどになります。根茎の先に葉を叢生し、茎の周りは多くの気根で被われます。名前は、葉痕が丸に八の字を逆さにしたように見えることから。

ヘゴ科ヘゴ属の常緑性シダ類で、学名は Cyathea mertensiana。英名はありません。

"Maruhachi" (Cyathea mertensiana) belongs to Cyatheaceae (the Tree-fern family). It is an evergreen tree fern that is native to Ogasawara Islands in Japan. This fern grows in forests and fields can reach about 10 m in height. Rhizomes are errect and sprout many aerial roots. Fronds are radiating on the top of rhizomes. Japanese name "Maruhachi" is named for the leaf scar. It looks like "○" (maru) + Kanji character "八" (hachi).
