The Massonia depressa belongs to Lilaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is found in Nankaland, Calvinia and the Southern Cape of South Africa. It grows in dry, sandy soil and has two large, ovate leaves that spread out on the ground. The leaves are about 17 cm long. It is a bulbous plant. The flowers are white with many stamens standing in clusters, surrounded by bract leaves with reddish edges. It is dormant in summer.
