わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは10〜30センチになります。茎(主軸)は地中を這い、そこから直立性の樹木状の側枝をだします。小さな葉は線形で、6〜8列が並びます。名前は、かたちが「すぎ」の小枝に似ていることから。夏、小枝の先に胞子嚢穂をつけます。 
ヒカゲノカズラ科ヒカゲノカズラ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Lycopodium obscurum。英名は Ground pine。 
The ground pine (Lycopodium obscurum) belongs to the family Lycopodiaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is native all over Japan and widely in the Northern Hemisphere. This fern grows in montane forests, and it can reach 10-30 cm in height. The stems crawl in the ground and bear erect arborescent offshoots. The leaves are linear and arranged in 6-8 rows. The spore spikes are borne at the apex of twigs in summer.
