アルゼンチン北東部からウルグアイ、パラグアイそれにブラジル南部に分布しています。高さは１８〜２７メートルほどになります。葉は卵状楕円形で、表面は光沢のある濃緑色です。この葉には１パーセント以上のカフェインが含まれ、葉や小枝から、インカ帝国以前から飲まれている「マテ茶」がつくられます。この「マテ茶」は、わが国の緑茶と製法が似ていて不発酵茶です。

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Ilex paraguayensis。英名は Yerba mate、Paraguay tea。

The Yerba mate (Ilex paraguayensis) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a tall evergrreen tree that is distributed from northeastern Argentina to Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil. The height will be about 18 to 27 m. The leaves are ovate-elliptic and the surface is shiny dark green. These leaves contain more than 1% caffeine, and the leaves and twigs make "mate tea," which has been drunk before the Inca Empire. "Mate tea" is a non-fermented tea that has a similar manufacturing method to Japanese green tea.
