The Lesser spearwort (Ranunculus flammula) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to western Siberia, northwest Africa, and northern North America. It grows in wetlands such as lakes, marshes, shores, and mudflats, reaching heights of 10 to 60 cm. The leaves are linear to lanceolate, with entire margins or fine serrations. From June to July, it blooms with bright yellow flowers at the stem tips. The flowers resemble those of the "buttercup", possessing a metallic sheen. The entire plant is toxic. It is very closely related to the "Creeping spearwort" (Ranunculus reptans).
