わが国の各地をはじめ、世界中の熱帯から温帯域に分布しています。池沼の水中に生え、長さは２０〜８０センチになります。沈水植物で、根はなく、水中を浮遊または特殊化した枝で水底に固着しています。茎は細長く、節に５〜１０個の葉が輪生します。葉は長さ８〜３５ミリで、１〜２回二叉分岐して線状の裂片になり、縁にはトゲ状の鋸歯があります。夏、葉腋に淡紅色の小花を１個ずつ咲かせます。「きんぎょも（金魚藻）」と総称される植物の１種で、しばしばアクアリウムで観賞用に栽培されます。

The Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) belongs to the family Ceratophyllaceae. It is a perennial waterweed that is distributed in the tropical and temperate regions of the world, including various parts of Japan. It grows in the water of ponds and is 20 to 80 cm long. It is a submerged plant that has no roots and floats in the water or sticks to the bottom of the water with specialized branches. The stem is elongated and 5 to 10 leaves grow in wholed on the node. The leaves are 8 to 35 mm long, bifurcated once or twice into linear lobes, and have thorn-like serrations on the edges. In summer, pink florets bloom one by one on the axils. It is one of the plants collectively called "Kingyo-mo" (Goldfish algae) and is often cultivated in an aquarium for ornamental purposes.
