わが国の南西諸島、石垣島と西表島から台湾、中国南部に分布しています。川沿いの崖に着生し、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。全体に柔らかい毛に被われます。葉は卵状長楕円形で対生します。７月から１０月ごろ、茎の先に総状花序をだし、黄色い漏斗形の花を咲かせます。花冠の内側には赤い斑紋があります。名前は、植物学者で小石川植物園の初代園長であった松村任三（まつむらじんぞう）に因みます。

イワタバコ科マツムラソウ属の多年草で、学名は Titanotrichum oldhamii。英名はありません。

"Matsumura-so" (Titanotrichum oldhamii) belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, the Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island, as well as Taiwan and southern China. This herb grows on cliffs along river and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The whole plant is covered with soft hairs. The leaves are ovate-oblong and arranged in opposite. The racemes are borne on the terminal stems, and the yellow funnel-shaped flowers bloom from July to October. The corolla has red specks on the inner surface. The Japanese name is named after Japanese botanist Jinzo Matsumura who was 1st curator of Koishikawa Botanical Garden.
