南アメリカのチリやアルゼンチンが原産です。わが国へは、江戸時代の終わりに渡来し、観賞用として栽培されていました。現在では、各地の海岸や河岸などに野生化しています。茎は直立し、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。葉は線状披針形で主脈は白く、互生します。５月から８月ごろ、葉腋から直径３〜５センチの黄色い花を咲かせます。花は夕方から開き、朝になると凋みます。凋むと赤くなるのが特徴です。

アカバナ科マツヨイグサ属の二年草で、学名は Oenothera stricta。英名は Chilean evening primrose。

The Chilean evening primrose (Oenothera stricta) belongs to Onagraceae (the Evening primrose family). It is a biennial herb that is native to South America, from Chile to Argentina. It was introduced into Japan as an ornamental plant in late Edo Era (1603-1868). Nowadays, it is naturalized in so many places, and grows on seashores or streambanks. The stem is erect and can reach 30-100 cm in height. The leaves are linear-lanceolate and alternate with whitish midribs. The yellow flowers 3-5 cm across come on the axiles from May to August. The flowers are open from evening to dawn and turn in reddish when faded.
