わが国の本州、中部地方以北の日本海側に分布しています。高山や高層湿原周辺の低木帯などに生え、高さは５０〜１２０センチになります。葉は広卵形から卵円形で互生し、縁には細かい鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋に赤みがかった淡黄緑色の花を下垂して咲かせます。果実は紫黒色に熟し、食べることができます。

ツツジ科スノキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Vaccinium shikokianum。英名はありません。

"Maruba-usugo" (Vaccinium shikokianum) belongs to Eriaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed on the Sea of Japan coast north of the Chubu region in Honshu, Japan. It grows on high mountains and in shrublands around high marshes, and grows 50 to 120 cm tall. The leaves are broadly ovate to ovate-round and alternate, with fine serrations on the edges. The fruits ripen to a purple-black color and can be eaten.
