メキシコからパナマにかけて分布しています。標高１９００メートルまでの熱帯雨林の樹木や岩上に着生します。球茎は卵形で匍匐して連なり、高さは２５センチほどになります。葉は線形で、球茎から１個でます。冬から春にかけて、花茎を伸ばして、芳香のある白色から濃赤色、オレンジ色、黄緑色などの花を咲かせます。 |

|
The Maxillaria variabilis belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Mexico to Panama. It grows on trees and rocks in tropical rainforests up to 1900 m above sea level. The spherical stems are ovate, creeping and sprawling, and grow to a height of about 25 cm. The leaves are linear, and one leaf emerges from each corm. From winter to spring, the scape grows and produces fragrant white, dark red, orange, or yellow-green flowers. |
