The Maxillaria variabilis belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Mexico to Panama. It grows on trees and rocks in tropical rainforests up to 1900 m above sea level. The spherical stems are ovate, creeping and sprawling, and grow to a height of about 25 cm. The leaves are linear, and one leaf emerges from each corm. From winter to spring, the scape grows and produces fragrant white, dark red, orange, or yellow-green flowers.
