わが国の本州、山形・宮城県以南から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国中南部に分布しています。河川や沼沢地など湿ったところに生え、高さは１０〜２０メートルになります。葉は広楕円形から長楕円形で、裏面は粉白色をしています。雌雄異株で、４月から５月ごろ、花序をだして黄緑色の花を咲かせます。若葉は赤みを帯び、そのため別名で「あかめやなぎ（赤芽柳）」とも呼ばれます。

ヤナギ科ヤナギ属の落葉高木で、学名は Salix chaenomeloides。英名は Japanese pussy willow。

The Japanese pussy willow (Salix chaenomeloides) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Yamagata-Miyagi prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and central-southern China. This tree grows in dry riverbeds or marshes, and can reach 10-20 m in height. The leaves are broad elliptic to oblong, and the abaxial sides are powdery white. It is a dioecious. It bears flowering clusters and bloom yellowish green flowers from April to May. The young leaves are tinged reddish.
