中国のチベット自治区南東部から雲南省北西部、ビルマ北部に分布しています。標高３０００〜４０００メートルの高山の草地や潅木帯に生え、高さは６０〜８０センチになります、基部の葉は卵形で褐色の毛に被われます。６月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして鮮やかな青い花を咲かせます。花色は、地域や個体、天候による差などによって、白色から青色までの変異があります。別名で「ヒマラヤの青い芥子」とか「天上の妖精」と呼ばれます。

ケシ科メコノプシス属の多年草で、学名は Meconopsis betonicifolia (syn. Meconopsis baileyi)。英名は Himalayan blue poppy、Tibetan blue poppy。

The Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia) belongs to Papaveraceae (the Poppy family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region of China to northwestern Yunnan and northern Burma. This herb grows on alpine grasslands and shrub belts at an altitude of 3000-4000 m and is 60-80 cm high. The basal leaves are ovate and covered with brown hairs. The flower stalks are stretched and bright blue flowers come in bloom from June to August. The flower color varies from white to blue depending on the region, individual, and weather.
