ヒマラヤが原産です。標高５０００メートルにあるヤクの放牧地周辺の大きな木立の中に生え、高さは６０センチほどになります。初夏に花茎を伸ばして、ベトニキフォリア種よりも大きな空色の花を咲かせます。アルカリ土壌の場合には、花色は淡い赤紫色になります。ブータンの国花で、ベトニキフォリア種と同じく「ヒマラヤの青い芥子」とも呼ばれます。

ケシ科メコノプシス属の多年草で、学名は Meconopsis grandis。英名は Tibetan blue poppy。

The Tibetan blue poppy (Meconopsis grandis) belongs to Papaveraceae (the Poppy family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Hymalayas. This herb grows in large scrubs that are near grazing lands of yak at about 5,000 m elevation, and it can reach about 60 cm in height. The large flowering stalks are borne in early summer and bloom azure flowers which larger than the Himalayan blue poppy (Meconopsis betonicifolia). This flower-color is pale magenta on alkali soils. It is the national flower of Bhutan.
