わが国の本州、福島・新潟県以西から四国、九州に分布しています。川縁や海岸などに生え、桿の高さは７メートルほどになります。葉鞘は桿の中程まであり、いつまでも残っています。葉は披針形で、枝先に掌状に３〜７個がつきます。先端部はやや垂れ下がります。桿は中空で竹細工に利用されます。

イネ科メダケ属の常緑ササ類で、学名は Pleioblastus simonii。英名はありません。

"Medake" (Pleioblastus simonii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is distributed from Fukushima and Niigata prefectures of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows along the edges of rivers and seashores, and the height of the culm is about 7 m. The leaf sheath extends to the middle of the culm and remains there indefinitely. The leaves are lanceolate and palmately attached to the ends of the branches, 3 to 7 in number. The tips droop slightly. The culm is hollow and used for bamboo crafts.
