The Medinilla coccinea belongs to Melastomataceae (the Melastome family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to New Guinea. It grows in humid tropical biomes and reaches a height of 90 to 120 cm. The stems are short and semi-woody. The leaves are large, lanceolate to ovate, hairless, with five distinct veins, and opposite. Long peduncles emerge from the top of the stem, and small pink flowers bloom under red bracts.
