マレーシアやフィリピン諸島が原産です。山地の樹上に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は楕円形から長卵形で対生し、目立つ３脈があります。秋から冬にかけて、枝先によく分枝した花序をだし、多くのオレンジ色の花を咲かせます。果実は青黒色の液果です。種小名は、イタリアの植物学者ベネデット・スコルテキニに因みます。

The Orange medinilla (Medinilla scortechinii) belongs to Melastmataceae (the Melastome family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Malaysia and the Philippines. This shrub grows on trees in the mountains, and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic to long ovate, arranged in opposite, and have prominent three veins. The much branched inflorescences are borne at the tip of branches, and the many orange flowers bloom from fall to winter. The fruits are blue-black berries. The specific epithet is named after the Italian botanist Benedetto Scortechini (1845-1886).
