The Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Berberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native from southern Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan. This tree can reach about 2 m in height. The branches are gray and longitudinally fissuered with fine spines. The leaves are small oblong and alternate. The small racemes are borne and the yellow flowers bloom almost as soon as foliation in April. The fruits ripen red in October. The 7th photo is a cultivar 'Atropurpurea', 24th and 25th are a cultivar 'Aurea'.
