北アメリカが原産です。わが国でも第二次大戦後、都市部を中心に広がり、とくに近畿地方以西でよく見られる帰化植物です。名前は「かるかや（刈萱）」に似ていることから。日当たりのよい、やや乾燥した荒れ地に生え、高さは５０〜１２０センチになります。９月から１１月ごろ、上部の葉腋から花序を出します。花序の枝には、白色の長い毛が密生します。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科メリケンカルカヤ属の多年草で、学名は Andropogon virginicus。英名は Broomsedge bluestem。

The Broomsedge bluestem (Andropogon virginicus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native to North America. It was naturalized after the Second World War in Japan, and can be found generally westward from Kinki district. This grass grows in sunny aridish barrens and can reach 50-120 cm in height. The flowering clusters are borne on the axile from September to November. The branches of cluster are covered with long white hairs. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
