中国の南部からベトナム、香港に分布しています。茎は地面を這い、よく分枝します。葉は卵形または倒卵形で、３〜５個の主脈があります。４月から７月ごろ、淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は７月から９月ごろ、紫黒色に熟して食用になります。また漢方では、腫れ止めや止血剤として用いられるそうです。中国語では「地菍（di nie）」と呼ばれます。

ノボタン科ノボタン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Melastoma dodecandrum。英名はありません。

The Melastoma dodecandrum belongs to the family Melastomataceae. It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from southern China to Vietnam and Hong Kong. The stems creep along the ground and are well branched. The leaves are ovate or obovate with 3 to 5 main veins, and the pale purple flowers bloom from April to July. The fruits ripen to a purple-black color and are edible from July to September. In Chinese medicine, it is used to treat swelling and as a hemostatic. In Chinese, it is called "地菍" (di nie).
