アメリカ・テキサス州南部のリオグランデ渓谷（Rio Grande valley）からメキシコ、グアテマラに分布しています。河岸や湿地などに生え、高さは１５〜３０メートルになります。幹は直立し、枝が伸びて広い樹冠を形成します。小枝は下垂し、針形の葉が２列につきます。「ぬますぎ」に似ていますが、秋に落葉しないのが特徴です。果実は直径１５〜２５ミリの丸い球果です。メキシコの国の木（National tree）に指定されています。英名は、メキシコのアステカ時代の王、モクテスマ（Montezuma）に因みます。

スギ科ヌマスギ属の常緑高木または半常緑高木で、学名は Taxodium mucronatum。英名は Montezuma bald cypress、Mexican cypress。

The Montezuma bald cypress (Taxodium mucronatum) belongs to Taxodiaceae (the Bald cypress family). It is a tall evergreen or semi-evergreen tree that is distributed from the Rio Grande valley of southern Texas in the United States to Mexico and Guatemala. It grows on riverbanks and wetlands, and is 15 to 30 m high. The trunk is upright and the branches extend to form a wide crown. The twigs hang down and the needle-shaped leaves are in two rows. It is similar to Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) but does not defoliate in fall. The fruit is a round cone with a diameter of 15 to 25 mm. It is designated as a national tree of Mexico. The English name comes from Mexico's Aztec king, Montezuma.
