アメリカの南西部に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の流れのそばや湿った草地などに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。根生葉は大きい円形で葉柄があります。茎葉は披針形です。花は筒状で先端は深く５裂し、はじめはピンク色、その後青紫色に変わります。花は夏に咲きます。

ムラサキ科ハマベンケイソウ属の多年草で、学名は Mertensia franciscana。英名は Franciscan bluebells。

The Franciscan bluebells (Mertensia franciscana) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the southwestern part of United States. This herb grows in montane to subalpine streamsides and in moist meadows, nd it can reach 60-90 cm in height. The basal leaves are large and round with petioles. The cauline leaves are lanceolate. The flowers are tubular, deeply divided into five lobes, and pink when immatue, then turn blue-purple. They bloom in summer.
