The Mexican edler (Sambucus mexicana) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the south-western United States and Mexico. This tree grows along streams, and in woodlands, desert grasslands, and can reach about 7-8 m in height. The bark is gray or light brown, furrowed into long, narrow, scaly ridges. The leaves are opposite, pinnately compound, with 3-5 leaflets. The leaflets are elliptic or ovate, pointed at tips, finely saw-toothed, and slightly thick and leathery. The yellowish-white flowers bloom in upright, flat-topped, many-branched clusters, neary throughout the year. After flowering, it produces bunches of edible blue-black berries.
