アメリカの南東部やメキシコ北東部に分布しています。湿り気のあるところの生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋に薄紫色の筒状花を咲かせます。葉にはふつうの「オレガノ」にはない香ばしい芳香があり、メキシコでは薬用に、またサウスウエスタン料理の香辛料として利用されます。

シソ科ポリオミンタ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Poliomintha longiflora。英名は Mexican oregano、Rosemary mint。

The Mexican oregano (Poliomintha longiflora) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the south-east United States and north-east Mexico. This shrub grows in waste places and can reach 60-90 cm in height. The pale purple tubular flowers come in the axils from June to July. The leaves have a spicy flavor, and used for medicine or south-western cuisine in Mexico.
