アメリカ中部から北メキシコが原産です。これは例えばアメリカの西海岸などで、広く栽培されています。林縁や開けた野原に生え、高さは４．５〜１１．５メートルになります。葉は濃い緑色で、単純な卵形、縁に細かい鋸歯があります。樹皮は暗い灰色で縦の皮目があります。白色で芳香のある花が早春に咲きます。秋の終わりには、濃紅色または紫色の果実が熟します。

バラ科サクラ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Prunus mexicana。英名は Mexican plum。

The Mexican plum (Prunus mexicana) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native in the central United States and Northern Mexico. Mexican Plum is widely cultivated, such as on the west coast of the United States. This tree grows on woodland edges or in open fields, and reaches a height of 4.5-11.5 m. The leaves are dark green, simple ovate with fine toothed edges. The bark is dark gray with horizontal lenticels. The white frangant flowers bloom in early spring. The dark red or purple fruit ripens late in the fall.
