わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島にも分布しています。山野や溝のそばなどに生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルになります。茎や葉には毛があります。葉は「やぶまお」に比べて薄く、広円形で対生します。また大きな鋸歯があり、先端は３裂していて、「カメ」の尾のように見えます。８月から１０月ごろ、葉腋から穂状花序をだして、小さな花を咲かせます。「やぶまお」と「あかそ」との交雑種といわれています。

イラクサ科カラムシ属の多年草で、学名は Boehmeria platanifolia。英名はありません。

"Me-yabumao" (Boehmeria platanifolia) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in fields, mountains or along ditches and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The stems and leaves are hairy. The leaves are thin, broad round and alternate. They have large teeth and trilobate tips. The small flowers come in the axillary spikes from August to October. This is considered a interspecific hybrid between "Yabu-mao" (Boehmeria longispica) and "Aka-so" (Boehmeria tricuspis).
