ブラジルの東南部に分布しています。標高１５００メートルあたりの岩場に生え、葉の長さは１．５メートルにもなります。「アナナス」の仲間では、最も大きくなる種類です。１．８メートル以上になる花茎を伸ばして、いくつにも分枝し、クリーム色の苞に包まれた鮮黄色の花をいっぱいに咲かせます。写真の上・中１〜２は、花茎の苞葉が赤味を帯びる園芸品種の「ルブラ（cv. rubra）」。

パイナップル科インコアナナス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Vriesea imperialis (syn. Alcantarea imperialis)。英名は Vriesea bromeliad、Imperial bromeliad。

Vriesea bromeliad (Vriesea imperialis) belongs to the Bromeliaceae (the Pine apple family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to southeastern Brazil. This herb grows in rocky places at 1500 m elevation and the leaves are about 1.5 m long. This is a largest species in the Ananas. The flower stalks grow out up to 1.5 m high and branched. It blooms many bright yellow flowers with creamy bracts. The 1st to 3rd photos are a cutivar 'Rubra'.
