わが国の固有種で、本州の関東地方から中部地方と四国に分布しています。標高の高い山地な生え、高さは５〜１２メートルになります。樹皮は暗灰色で平滑です。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、３〜４対の小葉がつきます。小葉は長楕円形で長さ４〜１２センチ、先端は鋭く尖り、縁には細鋸歯があります。５月ごろ、新枝の先端に円錐花序をだし、白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は４個で線形です。果実は狭倒披針形の翼果で、９月から１０月に熟します。

モクセイ科トネリコ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Fraxinus apertisquamifera。英名はありません。

The "Miyama-aodamo" (Fraxinus apertisquamifera) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and is distributed in the Kanto to Chubu regions in Honshu and Shikoku. It grows in high mountains and reaches a height of 5 to 12 m. The bark is dark gray and smooth. It has oddly pinnate compound leaves with three to four pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are oblong, 4 to 12 cm long, with sharply pointed tips and serrulated edges. The four petals are linear. The fruit is a narrowly oblanceolate samara that ripens from September to October.
