わが国の本州、中部地方と北海道、それにヨーロッパや北アメリカに分布しています。高山帯の草地に生え、高さは１５〜５０センチになります。葉は平滑で、扁平な線形です。７月から８月ごろ、茎頂に長さ１．５〜３センチの穂状をした円錐花序をだし、小さな花を咲かせます。

イネ科アワガエリ属の多年草で、学名は Phleum alpinum。英名は Alpine timothy、Alpine cat's tail grass。

The Alpine timothy (Phleum alpinum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Chubu district of Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan, Europe and North America. This herb grows in alpine grasslands and can reach 15-50 cm in height. The leaves are smooth and flat linear. The spike-like panicles 1.5-3 cm long are borne on the stalks and bloom small flowers from July to August.
