The Plate-petal magnolia (Michelia platypetala) belong to Magnoliaceae (the Magnolia family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to central-southern to southeastern China. It grows in forests at elevations of 1200 to 1500 m and reaches a height of about 20 m. The bark is grayish-white, and the branches are densely covered with reddish hairs. The leaves are narrow-elliptical to narrow-obovate, dark green, and have a thin, leathery texture. Around March, it produces white flowers in the leaf axils. There are nine perianth segments, with the outer ones measuring 5-7 cm in length. In Chinese, it is known as "闊瓣含笑" (kuo ban han xiao).
