The Creeping pine (Microcachrys tetragona) belongs to the family Podocarpaceae. It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to Tasmania, Australia. It is the sole species in its genus. It grows in subalpine to alpine zones, creeping along the ground and reaching a height of about 15 cm. Growth is slow, and it can live for hundreds of years. The branches are long and slender, whip^like, with a square cross-section. Leaves are scale-like, 2-3 mm long, densely overlapping, and arranged in four regular rows. It is monoecious, with male and female flowers on separate branches. Male flowers are about 2 mm long and bear over 20 stamens. Female flowers are spherical or ovate, 6-8 mm long, fleshy, and vivid red.
