わが国の本州、中部地方以北から東北地方に分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯の池沼や湿地に生え、高さは３０〜４０センチになります。茎は円柱形で、多数が叢生します。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に３〜５個の卵形の小穂をつけます。小穂の上には、直立する苞が続きます。果実は広倒卵形で、長さ１．５ミリほどです。

カヤツリグサ科ホタルイ属の一年草または多年草で、学名は Scirpus hondoensis。英名はありません。

"Miyama-hotaru-i" (Scirpus hondoensis) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is an annual or perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district to Tohoku district of Honshu in Japan. This herb grows in montane to subalpine ponds or marshes and can reach 30-40 cm in height. The stem is columnar and much clumping. The 3-5 ovate spikelets are borne on the stem apices from July to September. The bract is erect and stands on the spikelets. The fruits are broad obovate about 1.5 mm long.
