The "Miyama-kasumi-zakura" (Prunus x shikamae) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall decidouos tree that is a natural hybrid of "Miyama-zakura" (Prunus maximowiczii) and "Kasumi-zakura" (Prunus verecunda). This species has been growing wild here for some time, and was discovered in 2004 by Setsuro Shikama, an employee of the Yamagata City Wild Plant Garden. It was later discovered to be a new species, and was named by Professor Hideaki Oba of the University of Tokyo in 2012. Normally, "Kasumi-zakura", which blooms around April to May as its leaves unfold, and "Miyama-zakura", which blooms around May to June after its leaves have unfolded, rarely cross-pollinate. However, in a certain year, the blooming periods of the two coincided, and it is believed that they accidentally cross-pollinated and bore fruit. This species flowers at the same time as the leaves develop. Another characteristic is that the tips of the petals are not round, but have notches.
