The Kyushu azalea (Rhododendron kiusianum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Kyushu of Japan. This tree grows in montane screes or forest edges, and can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are elliptic or obovate, covered with pale brown hairs on both sides, and arranged in alternate. The magenta to white flowers bloom on the terminal branches from April to June. The corolla is broad funnel-shaped and divided into five clefts. It has five stames. Many cultivars have been raised.
