The Catclaw mimosa (Mimosa aculeaticarpa) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a deciduous shrub that is found in the southwestern United States, from Arizona to New Mexico and Texas, as well as in Mexico. It grows in deserts and dry shrub zones, and is about 1 m tall. It often branches out and forms a bushy shape. The twigs are covered in backward-pointing spines. The leaves are bipinnate compound, with several oblong leaflets. From March to May, it produces white or pale pink flowers in spherical inflorescences. The fruit is a flattened pod about 4 cm long. The pod has backward-curving radial spines.
