"Miyama-matatabi" (Actinidia kolomikta) belongs to Actinidiaceae (the Kiwi fruit family). It is a small, deciduous, vine-like tree that is distributed northward from Shikoku and the Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, and eastern Siberia. This vine climbs up adjacent trees. It resembles the silver vine, thought it can be distinguished by its cordate leaf bases, pink-colored leaves at flowering time, and reddish branches. The small white flowers bloom in May through June. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
