"Miyama-meshida" (Athyrium melanolepis) belongs to the Woodsiaceae family. It is a summer-green fern that is distributed from the Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido. This fern grows on wet slopes in subalpine to alpine zone, and 40-100 cm in height. The leaves are bipinnate compound, and the sori are aligned to both sides of the midrib of pinna. The dark brown, glossy, twisted scales stand out on the petioles.
