The Leather fern (Acrostichum aureum) belongs to the family Pteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is widely distributed from the Yaeyama Archipelago in Japan to Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia, South America, Africa, and other tropical regions. It grows in the upper reaches of mangroves and grows up to 3 m tall. The sterile fronds are long and slender, and the sporangia are attached only to the upper pinna. In Southeast Asia, it is said to be used to make brooms. It is called "鹵蕨" in Taiwanese Huayu and "鹵蕨" (lu jue) in Chinese.
