The "Mine-kaede" (Acer tschonoskii) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed northward from Shizuoka-Fukui prefecture of Honshu to Hokkaido and the southern Kuril Islands. This tree grows in sub-alpine zone and can reach 8-10 m in height. The leaves are divided into 5-7 lobes palmately, and the lobes are pinnatisect with duplicato-serratus edges. The tips of lobe are not caudate. The leaves turn yellow in fall. The pale yellow flowers bloom in the racemes from June to July. The fruits are samaras with right angle opened wings.
