The Cherry tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is an annual herb that is a cultivar-group of tomato which is native to the Andes region. The fruits are small berries and characterized by high sugar contents. They became common rapidly in the last harf of Showa Era (1926-1989). The garden-grown harvest moon is from July to September. The cherry tomato is also called "Mini-tomato" or "Petit-tomato" in Japan, but both of these are Japanese-English.
