インドからマレー半島、ボルネオ、ニューギニアに分布しています。熱帯果樹で、高さは１２〜１５メートルになります。葉は卵状長楕円形で、新葉は赤みを帯びます。花は小さく漏斗状で、白色または淡いピンク色です。果実は独楽のようなかたちで赤く熟します。生食用やサラダなどに利用されます。名前は、中国名の「蓮霧」から。

フトモモ科フトモモ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Syzygium aqueum。英名は Water apple。

The water apple (Syzygium aqueum) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to the Malay Peninsula, Borneo Island and New Guinea Island. It is also tropical fruit tree and can reach 12-15 m in height. The leaves are ovate-oblong and tinged reddish when young. The flowers are small funnel-shape and white to pink. The fruits are spinning top like shape and ripen red. They are used as a raw diet and salad.
