西アフリカの熱帯地方が原産です。成長は遅いですが、高さは４〜５メートルほどになります。葉は広被針形から倒卵状被針形で、枝先に２〜３個が集まってつきます。花は白くてほのかな芳香があり、果実は真っ赤に熟します。果肉にはミラクリンと呼ばれる糖タンパク質が含まれ、これを食べると酸っぱいものでも甘く感じさせる作用があります。

アカテツ科フルクリコ属の常緑低木で、学名は Synsepalum dulcificum。英名は Miracle fruit、Miracle berry。

The Miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) belongs to Sapotaceae (the Sapote famil). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to tropical West Africa. This tree can reach 4-5 m in height. Leaves are broad lanceolate to obovate-lanceolate, 2-3 fascicled on the tips of twig. Flowers are white and slightly fragrant, fruits ripen bright red. The flesh contains glycoprotein called Miraculin, which when eaten it has a function to make it sour even sweet.
