The Miro (Pectinopitys ferruginea) belongs to the family Podocarpaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is endemic to New Zealand. It grows in lowlands and on hillsides, reaching a height of about 25 m. The bark is thick and gray, peeling off in stripes. The leaves are twice pinnate compound, and the leaflets are dark green, green to blue-green, elongate, linear, and pointed at the tip. It is dioecious and flowers from June to October. The fruits are fleshy, ripen to red, and have a strong terpene odor and taste. The fruits are used as food for New Zealand pigeon, whose droppings disperse the seeds.
