The Knotweed (Polygonum aviculare) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is an annual herb that is widely distributed in the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere, including various parts of Japan. This herb grows in roadsides and barrens, and can reach 10-40 cm in height. The leaves are linear-lanceolate and alternate. The 1-5 fascicled, pale green flowers come in the axiles from May to October. The margin of tepals are tinged white or pale rose-pink. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "扁蓄" and "萹蓄" (bian xu) in Chinese.
