わが国の本州、近畿地方以北から北海道、それにサハリンに分布しています。本州では日本海側に多いようです。山地の林内に生え、茎はほとんど無毛で直立し、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は長卵形で対生し、まばらに毛が生えます。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から穂状花序をだし、淡い紅紫色の唇形花を咲かせます。萼にはまばらに細毛が生えます。

シソ科トウバナ属の多年草で、学名は Clinopodium sachalinense。英名はありません。

"Miyama-toubana" (Clinopodium sachalinense) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Kinki district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Sakhalin. In Honshu, it seems that there are many on the Sea of Japan side. This herb grows in montane forests and it can reach 30-70 cm in height. The stems are erect and almost glabrous. The leaves are long-ovate, opposite and bear hairs sparsely. The pale magenta labiate flowers bloom in the spikes atop of stems and axils from July to September. The calyx is covered fine hairs sparsely.
